Paste Plus is a direct-fed microbial product that contains live, naturally occurring lactic acid producing bacteria, a live yeast cell product and a significant amount of vitamins A, D3, B12, Niacin and Thiamine for supplemental nutritional support.
The living organism in Paste Plus contributes to the well being of animals by improving the intestinal microbial balance and is considered a beneficial bacteria. All negative types of bacteria reproduce themselves every 23 to 60 minutes. But because the major organism in Paste Plus reproduces itself every 18 to 19 minutes it out-reproduces the "harmful" bacteria. Paste Plus can inoculate the intestinal walls with good bacteria where they attach and grow and crowd out the "harmful" bacteria. Then the intestinal tract will contain a majority of beneficial bacteria, allowing the animal to utilize the nutrients in feed more efficiently. The beneficial bacteria also produce lactic acid which slightly alters the pH in the intestinal tract to levels that may not be favorable for undesirable organisms to grow.
A newborn calf has a totally sterile stomach and gastro intestinal tract. Only after microorganisms are introduced into the gut from colostrum milk, dirt, mud, manure and air does the gut start reproducing the ingested bacteria. When Paste Plus is given soon after birth, the beneficial microorganisms reproduce themselves to a point where they soon inhabit all the living space. When a calf picks up a "harmful" bacteria, like E. coli (which causes scours), it basically passes through the gut because there is no room for it to attach and grow. Paste Plus is an extremely effective way to get newborn calves off to a great start.
